What is a Debt Relief Order?

Debt Relief Orders were introduced in England and Wales as a personal debt solution on the 6th April 2009. They are available for people with unsecured debts of £15,000 or below.

Debt Relief Orders are designed to help people with little or no disposable income and very few assets resolve their debt problems.

Similar protection to that of bankruptcy

A Debt Relief Order works in a similar way to that of Bankruptcy. Once the Order is granted, the individual will no longer be responsible for paying their debts and Creditors can no longer pursue them for repayment.

People who use a debt relief order are not normally required to make any payments towards their debt.

The duration of the order is one year, at the end of which the debt owed is written off leaving the individual debt free.

Debt Relief Orders do not involve the courts. They are run by The Insolvency Service in partnership with approved debt advisers and the Official Receiver.
