How do I get a Debt Relief Order?

In order to apply for a Debt Relief Order, you will need to work with an authorised debt counsellor. The debt counsellor will review your individual circumstances and ensure that you meet the Debt Relief Order criteria.

The debt counsellor will complete the necessary application form on your behalf and send it to the official receiver for processing. An official receiver will be able to authorise the order without taking the application before the courts, thereby saving expensive fees.

FROM BEAT MY DEBT NEWS...

02 February 2012 - Are IVA payments fixed?

The official receiver will inform all creditors that the Debt Relief Order is in place. From this point your creditors are no longer able to chase you for the repayment your debt or add further interest or charges to the outstanding balances.

Monthly payments unlikely

If ordered to do so by the Official Receiver, you will be required to make monthly payments towards your debts. However, this is unlikely given that you will have only a small amount of disposable income if any. The Debt Relief Order will last for 1 year, at the end of which time the debt owed will be discharged leaving you debt free.

Authorised Debt Counsellors

To get in touch with an authorised debt counsellor, it is best to contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) or the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS).
